First Presbyterian Preparatory School
……..Rooted in tradition, Committed to innovation, Valuing excellence, Celebrating God’s love and purpose
“The mission of First Presbyterian Preparatory School is to provide a challenging academic program in a nurturing Christian environment. We strive to reach each student’s intellectual, spiritual, and creative potential to prepare them to be productive and respectful contributors to a global society.”
First Presbyterian Preparatory School embraces diversity as an essential part of our school culture and educational philosophy. We enthusiastically accept students from a variety of ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. All students are guaranteed the rights, privileges, programs, and activities made available to students at this school.
First Presbyterian Preparatory School was established in 1964 as a service to our church families and those in the surrounding community. It began as a preschool program with an initial enrollment of forty children. Today the preschool and elementary divisions combined are home to over two hundred and fifty students.
In 1973, the Church Session approved a proposal to add an elementary division consisting of grades K-3, one year at a time. By 1975, with a strong enrollment, it became apparent that there was a need in the community for us to offer grades 4-6. A proposal was approved to continue growing and by 1979 the school offered kindergarten through sixth grade.
In mid-1990 with the reconfiguration of the Los Angeles Unified School District, sixth grade was moved to middle school. Many private schools followed this pattern and with the graduating class of 1998, sixth grade had phased itself out at First Pres.
The number of classes and the class size has fluctuated over the past several years to meet the needs of a changing economy. First Presbyterian Preparatory School continues to thrive in its efforts to meet the needs of its students and families. We proudly maintain a strong presence in the community.
